Franciscan Sisters of Mary, Hosadurga was registered as a Trust on 30.07.2001. It consists of five units namely: Nisarga - Hosadurga Taluk, Chitradurga Dt Prathyasha - Chincholi Taluk, Kalaburgi Dt Amala Alaya - Sira Taluk, Tumkur Dt Nativity - Udupi Taluk, Udupi Dt Navajeevan - Karkala Taluk, Udupi Dt The major focus areas of the Trust have been women, children & their families, people living with disability, small & marginal farmers. Nisarga a Branch of Franciscan Sisters of Mary was started in Hosadurga, Chitradurga Dt, Karnataka in the year 1998 by a team of 4 Sisters namely Srs. Levenis DSouza, Treasa Martis, Mary Thomas & Stella Gnanaprakasham. The team was headed by Sr. Levenis who became the first Director of Nisarga. Today we have reached out to 8968 women through Formation and strengthening of Self Help Groups, 21,000 farmers through Watershed program, 12000 children through children’s clubs, 183 youth through Scholarship for soft skill development and job placement.

Based on the need assessment, community based organizations for women are promoted throughout Hosadurga Taluk. To build the capacity of these groups trainings are organized regularly on topics like Concept of SHG, Book writing, Linkages with Banks & Departments, Leadership, Gender sensitization, Health, Hygiene & Sanitation , Value addition to food preparation & nutritious food in take, Vision Building, Entrepreneurship Development Program, IGA, Panchayath Raj Institutions, Right to information Act & Environment protection & promotion.
Further to strengthen & sustain the SHGs, cluster level federations & taluk level federation is formed. The Taluk Level Federation (Maha Okkootta) is a registered body under the Societies Registration Act. Presently, there are 462 Women SHG’s, 19 Cluster & 1 Taluk level federation. The CBOs have been empowered & they organize International women’s day, sponsor poor girls for education, become members of SDMC, get various entitlements from Departments, take up women’s issues and contest for GP, TP, ZP elections.
The Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 defines
environment as “environment includes water, air and land and the
interrelationship which exists among and between air, water and land and human
beings, other living creatures, plants, micro-organism and property”.
NISARGA’s developmental approach includes Protection & Promotion of Environment. Hence, through the implementation of Watershed Development Programmes, Community Based Tank Rehabilitation Programme, Integrated Farming Systems and Promotion of Organic Farming, we ensure active interventions in the area of protecting the environment which in turn protects human health, protects the ecosystem and promotes the sustainable development.
Watershed
Development Programme (WDP)
Watershed development Programme is all about the
conservation, regeneration and the judicious use of all the natural resources
particularly land, water, vegetation and animals and human development within
the watershed.
The main objective of
the programme is to improve water conservation, irrigation facility, and land
use pattern leading to increased agricultural productivity in drought prone and
desert prone areas. Poverty reduction, better livelihoods and improved
bio-physical and socio-economic environment ensures sustainable development. It
is recognized as an effective measure in combating climatic changes world-widely.
Since 2003, NISARGA has been engaged in implementing the WDP in Hosadurga Taluk, one of the arid zones of Karnataka. 16 Watershed Development projects are completed and two are on the process.
a. Farmer Producer
Organization – “Raithashakthi Farmer Producer Company Limited
For the continuity of supporting the farmers in the Watershed area, Raithashakti FPO was formed and registered under Companies Act in 2019 with shareholders of four Watershed areas. Presently, it has 983 shareholders. It's an initiative of NABARD as follow up of the Watershed projects and Climate Change Adaptive Agriculture project.
b. jiva
For sustainable and climate adaptive Agriculture, Organic farming is promoted through JIVA Project. As a pilot intervention, 54 farmers are motivated and supported for initiating the organic farming in Siddhagondanahalli Watershed Area. JIVA aim to ensure using the principles of agro- ecology, long term sustainability and transform the pre-existing social and natural capital and encourage the farming community towards natural farming.
Children’s Clubs: A
platform for children to identify and develop their talents, potentials,
creativity and leadership qualities; to form values of fraternity and respect
for all. 506 children are part of 13 Children’s Clubs which are regularly
conducted on every Saturday/Sunday under the guidance of efficient staff.
It is the small change that makes the biggest impact.
